Over 45 acres of open space were made dedicated parkland at the September 19, 2006 Village Board meeting, village officials announced. Arthur J. Jones Park, Crawbuckie Nature Preserve, Sparta Park and Richard G. Wishnie Park have all been in use as parkland, but were never dedicated in whole as parks. Dedicated parkland is protected from development in perpetuity. To commemorate this historic day, the Village of Ossining is inviting all residents to Ossining Park Day on September 30, 2006. The schedule of Park Day is:
9:00 a.m. Breakfast At Arthur J. Jones Park: Coffee and Bagels, music and playground time at Sherman Avenue and Marshall Place
10:30 a.m. Crawbuckie Nature Preserve: Come explore this bit of Wilderness right in the heart of Ossining. Gather at the head trail at the very end of North Water Street, 1/8 mile north of the Snowden Ave and North Water Street intersection.
11:00 a.m. Sparta Park: Enjoy new Hudson Views, including a new vista of Croton Point Park
12:30 p.m. Richard G. Wishnie Park: Conclude Ossining Parks Day with lunch and family racing games at Pleasantville and Orchard Roads.
“We are so pleased to share this historic moment with all Ossining residents and special guests,” commented Ossining Mayor Miguel Hernandez, “On September 30, we will celebrate Ossining’s beautiful green spaces, gorgeous Hudson River views, and natural wild spaces at Ossining’s new 45 acres of dedicated parkland. Kudos to our Parks and Recreation Department for all of their hard work to keep these parks the special places they are.”
Ossining’s Recreation Superintendent, Henry Atterbury, added, “This dedication significantly increases the amount of parkland in the Village of Ossining. Sparta Park and Crawbuckie have been almost doubled in size. This gives us the opportunity to do additional improvements on these parks. For example, the New York/New Jersey Trail Conference has agreed to come to the Village to help us build trails and to teach village residents, trail maintained on a pro bono basis.”
